If you don’t have access to the Themeforest account which was used to purchase your theme license, then you would likely be better off purchasing a new license.
Once you have access to the theme files, then the update to 4.8.x has to be done manually from the version you are running, please refer to my replies in this thread: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/enfold-4-5-theme-update-update-failed-download-failed-a-valid-url-was-not-pro/#post-1021541
You can either update manually via FTP: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/how-to-install-enfold-theme/#theme-update, or use a plugin to upload the theme zip file: https://wordpress.org/plugins/update-theme-and-plugins-from-zip-file/
If that doesn’t work then please try to delete the whole theme folder, then replace it with the new version. Make sure that you have backups of the site before starting updating.

I’m not sure how you acquired your license, but if you didn’t purchase it yourself, then you would likely have to purchase a new license in order to access the theme files. Unless you can get the necessary information from the person who actually bought the license you are using.

You will need a purchase code to be able to register on the support forum, maybe you can get that from the person who bought the license which you are using? If you don’t have access to the theme files on Themeforest, then you will likely have to purchase a new theme license at some point, since you won’t be able to update the theme otherwise.

I’m not sure exactly what you are referring to, but if you want to use elements from the Layout Builder in your sidebar, then please activate debug mode: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/intro-to-advanced-layout-builder/#debug-mode. After that then you can copy the shortcode of the element in question into a text widget in your sidebar.

Thanks for that. The fatal error seems to be coming from this line in your functions.php file:

Could you try temporarily removing that function before you update, to see if that makes any difference please?

If the problem is not reproducible on other devices, then it might be caused by something local like caching. Could you ask your client to use a different or private/incognito browser window to see if that changes anything please? We can’t help you out further with this unless we can actually reproduce the problem on our end.

Thanks for that. The button row displays as it should when logged in (see screenshot in private), but not when logged out. That indicates that caching is the likely problem. Please try clearing all caches that are applying on your site.
Fatal error email; did you get this only once? If so, then it might have been something temporary. I can’t see any error message on either the front or backend of the page you linked to.

This CSS seems to be causing that to happen:
