Please try the following and check if that makes a difference:
1. Install this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-image-sizes/
2. Go to Settings > Media
3. Change the entry_with_sidebar image size (increase its width / height).
4. Regenerate the thumbnails by clicking the button at the bottom.

You can create a testing installation by migrating your existing site there using a plugin such as this one – https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-migrate-db/ and you could try updating the theme there to see if it breaks anything.
