There is no space for the images on mobile and so should be hidden.

CSS can add opacity or greysacle but it cannot add an overlay, the overlay has to be added as an additional div.

Please deactivate all plugins one by one to check which one is causing this issue and let us know if this solves the problem.

Can you please have Appearance > Editor enabled for us to check the child theme and then you can hide it again.
