Sorry for the late reply, the code was only a temporary fix and should not be necessary in the next version, so you should be able to simply continue updating as usual.

Please try the following plugin to clear WordPress transients: https://wordpress.org/plugins/artiss-transient-cleaner/, updating from the backend should work after that. If not then you could try updating manually: http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/updating-your-theme-files/

What happens exactly when it “crashes”? You could try increasing WordPress memory to see if that helps: http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP

That is strange, I don’t think it has anything to do with the theme though. Could you try deactivating all plugins to see if one of them is causing a conflict please?
