not sure what you are doing wrong with the code, but I would suggest to then replace the icon, with a different icon through CSS

how to replace an fontello Icon for an own customized icon

Take a look at the issue, it should fix all the problems.

Yes, most probably Yoast has that option as I have seen it ( for custom post types ).

That would require a lot of modifications in the header I am afraid and it is outside of our scope of support as the amount of CSS required is a lot.
I would suggest to go ahead to hire somone who could help you get the work some steps forward.
