I received an email the other day from Envato.
I’m just curious if this update is a must, similar to a WordPress update (if you don’t do it it puts your site at risk), or if it’s optional, or even a good idea if my site uses Enfold but is highly customized (does have a child theme).
Here’s what the email said:
“We’d like to let you know that an update to your item Enfold – Responsive Multi-Purpose Theme by Kriesi is now available in your Downloads page.”
Any insight on this would be appreciated – thanks!

It is the same with WordPress core, the theme and all the plugins you are using:
It is crucial that you keep them up to date all the time otherwise you will not get all the most recent bug fixes and improvements, so yes, I would highly recommend to update to the newest Enfold version. However, the “normal” update via dashboard will not work this time as Envato changed their API. To update anyway you should update manually via (S)FTP.
Best,

Can you offer a summary of steps to do this important update manually? I’m pretty tech. savvy but I realize one must proceed with caution with these kind of things.
Thanks again.December 22, 2018 at 9:15 pm #1048643Hi
Sure – please follow this step by step guide I wrote a couple months ago in order to update via FTP.
Cheers
MichaelFebruary 16, 2019 at 10:51 pm #1067830Hi Michael (or anyone else who can help),
I’m finally getting around to updating the Enfold Theme.
I started following the instructions in the Step-by-Step Guide you linked to above, but I’m a little confused by steps 10 and 11, and I don’t want to go forward until I’m 100% clear. I wondered if you could offer some clarification?
One other question I had – was that I have a highly customized child theme with Enfold. Do I need to delete and replace the Enfold Child Theme as well? Or no?
Below I will copy and paste parts of your guide that I don’t fully understand, with my questions:
10) Your current API token will not work anymore as Envato changed some stuff on their API. Therefore you need to remove your current key and generate a new private key as visible in your themeforest account under “Settings” -> “API keys”.*Question on this – I went to this page in my Themeforest account and generated a “Legacy API key” (there wasn’t one already there) is that correct? It’s a long password/code. I’m assuming that’s what I copy and paste into the fields in WordPress Admin -> Enfold Child -> Theme Update?
Go to https://build.envato.com and follow the steps there.
*Question on this – I don’t understand this part – what steps exactly to I follow at that URL, this isn’t clear to me?
To me, https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/how-to-install-enfold-theme/#toggle-id-5 was also very helpful (scroll down a bit there to find out about the permissions your private API key needs in order to check for future Enfold updates). Without these permissions it will not work.
*Question on this – When I go to that URL, there are some helpful additional instructions, but I don’t see anything about the API key at all?
11) After revalidating your new private key within the Enfold update tab, you should see a blue rectangle saying when it could be checked for the last time.
*Question on this – Checked for the last time for what? Do I have to go back and check it for something? Not sure what you mean here?
I would love to get this update process done, but I want to proceed carefully and know I’m on the right track. I would appreciate your help and clarification to my questions. Thanks!
February 17, 2019 at 1:01 am #1067848Hi
Yes, you have to go to https://build.envato.com and generate a new token there. Did that not work for you?
You just insert that API key in your Enfold backend settings and if you see this blue rectangle, it means you are all set!If you still have some questions or concerns please let me know.
Cheers
MichaelFebruary 17, 2019 at 3:15 am #1067853Michael,
So if I’m understanding right (I’m doing this Enfold update through FTP by the way), I don’t need to generate an API key under Settings at ThemeForest.net at all anymore? Instead I need to generate a new one at https://build.envato.com?And if that’s correct – when I go to that url and click on API, if I’m already signed into my ThemeForest accnt. it logs me in, but I’m taking to a page with a loooonnggg list of various instructions. I searched and searched and searched, since it wasn’t obvious, but finally found a link that said ‘generate token’ and I got that done, copied & saved.
Can you confirm that’s what I’ll enter in my Enfold CHILD Template Settings in WordPress, and NOT the API key I generated under settings in myThemeForest.net account?
One other question I had – was that I have a highly customized child theme with Enfold. Do I need to delete and replace the Enfold Child Theme as well? Or no?
Thanks!

Yes, that’s correct.

Yes, you need to enter the API key generated via https://build.envato.com.

No – don’t touch your child theme at all. You only need to replace and update your parent Enfold theme, that’s it. Leave the child theme as you have it right now.
Hope that helps :)
MichaelFebruary 17, 2019 at 11:22 pm #1068058Thanks for clarifying Michael!
I have successfully removed the old enfold folder, and replaced it with the most current version via FTP.When I entered the token I generated in the Theme Update area though, I got an error message (I’ll link to a screenshot in the PC).
FYI, I generated a token first yesterday in the settings of my ThemeForest accnt. Didn’t do anything with it, just saved it in a .txt file.
Then, once I understood where the token had to come from, after that yesterday I generated one at https://build.envato.com.
I also saved that in a .txt file, and that’s what I entered in my WordPress Theme Update settings just now (after the new enfold folder was finished uploading)… and then got the error.Do you have any ideas for me – why I’m getting the error, and what to do next?
Thanks!February 18, 2019 at 3:12 am #1068098That’s great news – good job!
I can’t see the private content as I am just a participant like you, however, I think this link should give you some hints about it:
// https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/theme-registrationYour current issue is probably connected to the token permissions. So after you have sorted that out, it should be fine I hope.
February 18, 2019 at 5:25 am #1068110Woo hoo, thanks Michael! I didn’t have all the necessary permissions checked, but when I did that and revalidated, it worked! Yay, so happy I was able to get this done.
Thanks again for all your help! :)
