    Hi
My site is lysetremblayjewelry.ca. It does not get notification that there is an update for ENFOLD. So I updated the STAGING area for this live website via FTP. I lost some of my ENFOLD settings, i.e. my color scheme. This is a live site and I cannot update to the latest version knowing that this may happen. What do you suggest I do? Why don’t I get the auto-notification update for this site, it seems to update smoothly with another install without losing any settings (herbalhealinginc.ca)?

    Thanks
    Lyse

    Hi tremblayly!

    See: http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/updating-your-theme-files/

If you aren’t getting the update notice in WordPress then the username and API data is incorrect. It takes 12 hours or so to get the notice after first putting in the credentials usually.

When you update via FTP make sure to set in your FTP program to only replace files which are different from the existing ones. This will make sure, that you won’t override any other files.

    Regards,
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
I updated my API credentials. Will try later and see if I get the update availability notification.
    Thanks

    Hi Andy,
    Here’s an update:
I got the notification to upgrade. The upgrade failed (said it could not remove the old theme). So I tried via FTP which too forever as it kept timing out. I finally uploaded it a few folders at a time but ended with an error with one of the folders which did not upload successfully. It actually took my site down and I had to contact WP Engine support to help me. All I was getting was a blank screen. Finally they told me which folder caused the “500” error. I uploaded it and got to access my site again. After testing everything I copied this upgraded STAGING area to my live, tested, and all appears to work fine.

That too me a good part of the day to upgrade just the theme!

    Thanks

    Hi!

Which folder causes the error? The update should take less than 10 minutes if everything goes smoothly. Did you ask your host why the ftp keeps timing out?

    Best regards,
    Ismael

I’m not a moderator here, but I thought I’d chime in. It sounds like maybe, when you tried to FTP files up the first time, manually, you might have changed permissions on a folder. Then, when you went to do the auto-update, it couldn’t overwrite it.

    Hi Ismael,
The folder was config-templatebuilder. It apparently gave a “500 error” which was only visible to the WP Engine support (I only got a blank screen). They asked me to upload the folder again after which allowed me to access my admin area and website.

    Hi Interage,
Other partricipants’ input is sometimes insightful and I appreciate the interest to help and share. I’m not sure how I could have changed the permissions. I use Dreamweaver to upload my files but I don’t specify any settings related to file permissions.

    Thanks

    Hey Lyse!

Perhaps you -or the ones who helped you- changed the theme folder name (“enfold”) and that caused the Theme Settings to be re-set (these are saved with the theme folder name as the identifier). In any case this seems to be an isolated incident as there are thousands of users who update their themes via FTP without issue.

    Regards,
    Josue

    Hi Josue,
I renamed the folder before copying it over. I got them all back now. This is not what I normally do.
    This ticket can be closed.
    Thank you
