I have created over 20 websites with the Enfold theme and have found that whenever I create a website in a subdirectory of a website or on a temporary URL, I have problems when the website is moved to either the root directory or when the domain name is pointed to the server.

I thought that perhaps I was doing something wrong so I hired a WordPress expert to move some of the websites for me and he has experienced the same problem. The websites have been hosted with different companies.

For example, if I move a website from http://www.xyzcompany.com.au/wordpress to http://www.xyzcompany.com.au, the following happens:

The company logo disappears and is replaced by Enfold logo
All the quick CSS codes disappear
    Page background disappears
Footer columns go to the default 4 columns
    Advanced settings disappear.

Please see the link below which shows what a completed website looked like while it was in a subdirectory and then what happened when it was moved to the root directory

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Hey Ivana!

What steps are you taking to “move” the install. I’ve done it maybe 20 times for various clients and have never had the issue.

The change over takes less than five minutes and doesn’t include moving any data or even modifying the database other than the site url so none of the theme data *should* be even relevant.

    Hi Devin

With the websites that I moved from a subdirectory to a root directory, I would change the WordPress URL and Site URL from eg. http://www.xyzcompany.com.au/wordpress to http://www.xyzcompany.com.au.

I would then move all the files from the subdirectory to the root directory using FTP.

My WordPress guy said this is the process that he follows:

    1. We copy all the files to root.
    2. Replace site url in database exported file with the main root URL.
    3. Import the database.

This issue has come up with each website that was moved or renamed from temporary URL to domain URL.

At first I thought I did something wrong, but then I had one tech guy do it last year and he came up with the same problem. These past few months I’ve had someone else move my sites and he too has experienced the same issue. So I’m at a loss.

    Cheers

    Hey!

When moving a WordPress database you need to account for serialized data which can change when the url changes. We have a recommended plugin for exporting the database on our docs: http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/move-from-a-local-installation-to-a-live-server/

You also don’t actually even need to move the database to do a simple directory change which is what I usually do for my clients. I will develop on a sub directory and then in the future if they want to setup a dev folder or another sub folder for a different installation there is no issues. These are the steps:http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory#Using_a_pre-existing_subdirectory_install

The files and database stay intact but the url for how everything is accessed changes.

    Devin

Thanks Devin. I will pass the info onto my WordPress guy.

You mentioned that you have done the install for various clients – if I can’t work it out with my tech guy – are you available for me to hire you for future projects?

    Cheers
