I completed my optimizations for http://globalz.com using the Enfold theme using previous posts and got amazing results for the desktop. The Google number was 94. But, since Google moved to mobile-first page rankings and as performance is a factor, I am concerned that the identical page gets a 33 for mobile. Why is there such a difference?

So, I ran an experiment. I took the same page and removed all of the content, but left the plugins alone. As you might expect, the page https://globalz.com/home-no-content/ received a perfect 100 score for the desktop. Sadly, even without content, the result was an amazingly low 63.

What is going on with Enfold’s mobile performance? How can this be improved?

I am having exactly the same problem with my site

    Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. So you are expecting a 100 score on both mobile and desktop out of the box? Please note that all scripts etc. will be loaded even though you are not having any content on the page.

I’m not sure how Google sets the scores for their tests either, it seems to be complaining about the same things on both mobile and desktop but the scores are completely different.

We can’t do anything about things like this unfortunately: Reduce server response times (TTFB).

    Best regards,

Something is broken in Enfold. It takes 12 seconds to load in mobile what loads in 2 seconds on the desktop. Same internet connection. Something is wrong in the coding.

    #1039506

Hopefully, this helps. Same site with desktop and mobile. wildly different load times, both in google pagespeed and on my cell phone for real word test

Google seems to be a lot tougher on the mobile score than the desktop. Looks to me like a lot of websites rank lower on the new mobile scoring system.

On my personal enfold site tho with just WP- rocket installed I’m getting 90 mobile and 100 desktop. I was getting much lower prior to optimizing images, minifying and deferring css and java, etc.

Try some more of the suggestions it gives you to increase score.

Even testing google.com they rate themselves 100 desktop and 91 mobile, and there’s nothing even on their search page… take it with a grain of salt.

    Hi,

Could you be a bit more specific, what exactly is wrong with “the coding”?

You could try analysing your site with the test in private, I’m not seeing any 12 seconds anywhere, although it’s slow. That might be because of all this traffic though:

    fast.wistia.net
    15.2%
    12
    embedwistia-a.akamaihd.net
    7.6%

    connect.facebook.net
    3.8%
    3
    static.addtoany.com

    3

But please share what is wrong with the code in the theme, it would be nice if you could enlighten us.

    Hi Brutalben,

Thanks for chiming in, I will have to agree with you Googles tests should be taken with a grain of salt. The test didn’t give you any speed information before the update, after they have added TTFB, but not really much else. I’m not sure if the update added anything useful to be honest.

    Rikard,

I am not expecting a 100 score. I am not sure what made you say that. And, you cannot take Google mobile performance with a grain of salt. It is what they use as an element in determining page rankings, which is important to all of us in the business world.

The real issue is that the best result that I could possibly get with Enfold in mobile performance is only fair. I want to do better than that. Ideally, I would like to see above 90. But, I will accept something closer.

Other people in this thread have talked about loading times on mobile versus desktop. Is there something that can be going on there?

Please do not take it personally. We are trying to problem solve with you. It seems to me that Enfold is doing something that does not perform well on mobile. Do you have any thoughts on what may be the cause?

Loading the site on mobile takes 13 seconds, same site on desktop 1-2 seconds.
Same plug-ins, same everything. When Enfold sizes for mobile there is huge delays.

Why does it load 600% – 1000% slower for mobile? I turned off almost everything to display on mobile page and it still takes 13 seconds to complete loading.
So I think mobile is loading desktop and mobile but just not displaying desktop, that is my guess.

Same Enfold Website Desktop 2 seconds – Mobile 13.7 seconds
Even when I make the mobile site blank it still is loading the site in 13 seconds.
That is why I suspect something is wrong with the Enfold Theme for Mobile (Desktop works great)

    Desktop Site – First Contentful Paint 0.6 s Speed Index 2.6 s Time to Interactive 2.0 s

Mobile First Contentful Paint 2.6 s Speed Index 3.9 s Time to Interactive 13.7 s

    Hi,

Thanks for that, could your results be due to something local on your site maybe? I can’t see anything like those results when analysing the default demo for instance: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkriesi.at%2Fthemes%2Fenfold%2F

I have sent a message to the Hosting Company to see if they can unravel the mystery. Thanks for your interest, and I will let you know if they find anything.

    Hi,

Thanks for the update. I hope you get some clarity from your hosting provider, though it would be much more interesting if Google would clarify their test a bit more. I don’t think that will ever happen unfortunately.

A lot of the characteristics for the Google Page Speed do not depend on the theme. Server response times for example. Or HTTP header for browser caching. Or image size/compression.

I am running Enfold 4.5 and get this scores (while the server is’nt too busy with other tasks):
    Mobile: 93
    Desktop: 100

Getting the page speed up needs adjustments a theme can’t solve out of the box.

Do you have a cache plugin running?
Some caches seperate the output for desktop and mobile … WP Super Cache for example. When your page is cached normally but not for mobile there can be substantial differences in loading time between desktop and mobile.

    #1040391

    Rikard and cg,
It is interesting to see the differences that you are getting on mobile versus desktop and what I am getting.
I have focused my efforts on the page http://globalz.com/home-no-content which contains only a header and footer. There is no other content on the page. The server is identical in both cases.

When I run PageSpeed Insights for desktop, I get a remarkable score of 100. Here is the breakdown:

    First Contentful Paint 0.6 s
    Speed Index 1.7 s
    Time to Interactive 1.3 s
    First Meaningful Paint 1.0 s
    First CPU Idle 1.3 s
    Estimated Input Latency 10 ms

When I run the same page just seconds later for mobile, I get a less remarkable score of 56. Here is the breakdown:

    First Contentful Paint 2.1 s
    Speed Index 5.8 s
    Time to Interactive 8.0 s
    First Meaningful Paint 4.0 s
    First CPU Idle 7.0 s
    Estimated Input Latency 50 ms

Note the difference in First Contentful Paint. It goes from 0.6 seconds to 2.1 seconds. The first meaningful paint goes from 1 second to 4.0 seconds. And, the first CPU idle shifts from 1.3 seconds to 7.0 seconds. Time to interactive, which I think is the most meaningful, goes from 1.3 seconds to a full 8 seconds. I am guessing that is the biggest issue.

These results have me wondering about the differences between the two pages. For example, is there something about the hamburger menu that creates delay? Is there an issue with resizing the images in the header and footer?

I am thinking of making the page without a menu or footer to see if we can isolate the issue further.

Thank you for considering the issues.

Hi, when I investigated deeper, I found that a recommendation was to remove an “unused” stylesheet that takes 1.4 seconds to load.
    dynamic_avia/avia-merged-styles-f4d6565….css 76 KB 1,380 ms

There was also a jquery that takes about a second to load.
    jquery/jquery.js?ver=1.12.4 39 KB 930 ms

I am, honestly, way over my head here. I am hoping that the information will help you to have an inspiration. I appreciate all of your help. I love the Enfold theme and only hope to make it even better.

Normally WordPress and Enfold doesn’t do any special things regarding desktop or mobile … it’s the same HTML output (mostly).
You can for example shrink your dektop browser window and you will see the mobile version. That’s called “responsive”. Same page content and styling for all different devices.

The difference in the Page Speed score should only result as a divergent scoring system for mobile and desktop … not because the results of the tests are actually different …

Very odd what you have there … :-)

    Edit:
for example a page needs 2.0 seconds to load.
That should be the same for desktop and mobile … if it’s not too much data and the slower connection (3G) is not that relevant in relation to server response time and rendering. WordPress and Enfold do the same things / need the same time for mobile and desktop regardless.
Now Google Page Speed says 2.0 seconds are a score of 90 for desktop … but only 80 for mobile … because Google wants mobile to be faaaaassst …
… there you have different scores … but the 2.0 seconds are the same (should be the same) … not like in your case …

    Edit2:
You have the WP Rocket Plugin active … i would still presume the caching system as the root cause for this

Controll your settings or try the Page Speed Test without WP Rocket enabled.

    => https://docs.wp-rocket.me/article/708-mobile-caching

Should I enable caching for mobile devices?
Yes, as a rule of thumb, you should enable caching for mobile devices.

What does “Separate cache files for mobile devices” mean?
When this option is enabled, WP Rocket will create a dedicated cache file for mobile devices for every document that gets cached. As a result, WP Rocket will serve an entirely different cache file to mobile phones than to tablets, or desktop computers.

Note: If no mobile cache option is enabled, WP Rocket will not serve any cached documents to mobile devices. Visitors viewing your website on their phone will receive (slower) page views directly from the WordPress database.

    Hi,

I read somewhere that Google uses 3g/4g network speeds when measuring the mobile speed, that would explain the very different results between desktop and mobile. I haven’t been able to verify that information though.

    Best regards,
    Rikard
