Make a rotating gallery of icon boxes with their content linking to single page

I need to make a set of icon boxes into a rotating gallery, with links to a single page of stories that are expanded from the icon boxes. Right now you can see three icon boxes on the homepage, which all link to the stories page (Case examples). What I want is for all 6 stories to show in a carousel of icon boxes on the homepage. My question is, do I need to create these as custom post types to make this work, or is there another way?
