I am using yoast premium and when activating the sitemap I get this error
This page contains the following errors:
error on line 41 at column 6: XML declaration allowed only at the start of the document
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.I have followed the recommended issues resolution on yoast and appear to be with enfold. When I activate another theme say twenty nineteen I dont get this error.

Could you try updating the theme to the latest version (4.7.6.4) to see if that helps please? https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/how-to-install-enfold-theme/#theme-update.
