I ask it to check manually and it says everything is current. I go to Appearance and Themes and it tells me I’m all up-to-date. I’m ready to update to WordPress 5 and I want to update the theme first… suggestions?
If it matters, I built the site in a subdirectory…
Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry for the problem. The update to 4.6.x has to be done manually from the version you are running, please refer to my replies in this thread: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/enfold-4-5-theme-update-update-failed-download-failed-a-valid-url-was-not-pro/#post-1021541
You can either update manually via FTP: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/how-to-install-enfold-theme/#theme-update, or use a plugin to upload the theme zip file: https://wordpress.org/plugins/update-theme-and-plugins-from-zip-file/
If that doesn’t work then please try to delete the whole theme folder, then replace it with the new version. Make sure that you have backups of the site before starting updating.
Also please read this after you have updated: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/theme-registration/

I assume that after I upload and activate the new theme, all of my “changes” will no longer exist. So I need to go tab by tab and be sure I have documentation of each and every choice and change that I made to the theme?
Does the export feature work? I mean it obviously took me weeks to develop this site and now I am going to have to upload the new theme and in a matter of hours get their site “live” again.
This is a true nightmare.
Is there any workaround to not having their site completely messed up and live!

If you have only made configurations to the theme and Quick CSS then you shouldn’t lose anything on updates. Please have backups of the site in case should go wrong though. What is a true nightmare about that? You haven’t updated your site before this? Did you lose all of your settings then? Yes, the import/export functionality works so you can use that as an extra safety precaution.
Best regards,
