Comments widget – subscriber login doesn't work

Hi, I have never used the comments widget on the page before. It does not appear to work. Currently I have pulled the widget onto the page. In settings I have the setting to ‘allow new subscribers’. In Settings/Discussion I have it set to allow people to post comments as long as they are logged in. I tried to create a comment on a page and it says of course “only logged in users can reply’ so I use the link to login. The login appears to go through ok and it brings me back to that same page and I am STILL unable to post a comment. I just keep getting the same message “only logged in users can reply’. The textbox never shows up and it just keeps requesting me to login over and over. Why is this not working? See login info in private content
