    I need the entire background — excluding header and footer — to be a different background color than other pages. I have tried amending the main_color class but nothing works: or it changes everything or it only changes the .entry-content.

    Hey kate,

    The site is password protected and we cannot view it. however to have a different background color except header and footer please use a color section and add all the page content inside the colorsection. You can then easily set the background color of the colorsection in the colorsection elements edit options.
