breadcrumb problem in portfolio items

Hej!
We have 2 main categories in our portfolio items, ‘inspiratie beelden’ and ‘steken’.
We want to show those 2 categories separately and that works.
However, when you click on an item (shown in the grid) and view the item, the breadcrumb always shows the category ‘inspiratiebeelden’, even though it is in the ‘steken’ category.

I read the solution about adding some code to functions.php. I am not looking forward to that. Is there another solution?
