Heyo. I’m doing some development work for a client who is currently running version 4.2.6 of the Enfold theme. I’m getting what seems to be a pretty standard error message: An error occurred while updating Enfold: Download failed. Problem downloading theme.

I am familiar with how to update the theme using FTP. However, the previous developer made a number of styling changes in the wp-admin > Enfold > Theme Options / General / Advanced areas and unfortunately, they did not use the child theme. I realize that the actual content will still be in the database but I’m concerned that we’ll lose all of the styling that was added to the parent theme.

    1) Can you confirm whether or not we’ll lose this styling?
    2) Is there a way to export these settings and import them back into the theme or child theme once the update is completed?

On a side note, I have already added the child theme with version 4.2.6 of the parent theme. After activating it, it seems that none of the styling (colors, logo, layout) are being applied from the parent: It’s just displaying the blogroll. Is this the expected behaviour?

    Thanks!

    Hey Watermart

First of all, do a full backup of the website.

Can you confirm whether or not we’ll lose this styling?

I would suggest doing the following: export the theme options from your parent theme. There is an option for that in the Enfold tab called “Import/Export”. Save this file somewhere. Afterwards you can install and activate your child theme and import the settings from your parent theme by uploading this file there and all the values should be the same as for the parent theme. If not (for some reason) you can always go back to your parent theme, nothing is lost as you said.

Is there a way to export these settings and import them back into the theme or child theme once the update is completed?

    See answer above.

    I hope that helps.

    Cheers

That’s excellent! First time I have seen this functionality built into a parent theme. Well played – child theme is active and the import worked like a charm! :)

Now to update the parent theme… Thanks!
