The problem has evaporated into hot air ;-)!
I suppose it was some cache related issue: I had left the browser tab open, so when I came back this morning and clicked on the burger, it would not open. However after one ‘normal’ (cmd-R) reload, it would work immediately.

Of course, last night when the problem occurred, I flushed the site cache (W3 Total Cache: empty all caches) and reloaded a couple of times…

Any idea what went wrong there? Except for time heals all wounds…

for now, everything is fine, and I don’t know a way to reproduce it.
