Why don’t you just use css? This would only be efficient if the border applies to all the images. If not, you will still have to add a class to each image which is essentially still a process.

There has been no additional update on this outside of Vinay’s post from a few months back. Once there is movement you will certainly be notified in the changelogs.

That code should have been added to the functions.php file, not quick css.
