@michaelgallacher – sorry to hear that
Most of the Moderator suggestions point the finger at the client and suggest they look at their token permissions.
I think the issue is with the theme and it’s implementation of the token system.
February 20, 2019 at 5:34 am in reply to: Unable to update Enfold, getting message: Download Failed. Forbidden. #1069264I have managed to update 4.5.2 to 4.5.4 by using the procedure in THIS POST
However removing the token, updating, reinstalling the token, manually checking and updating again is a clunky workaround to what should be a simple updating process.
I don’t have this issue with Avada or Impreza.- This reply was modified 5 years, 9 months ago by johpg.
February 20, 2019 at 3:55 am in reply to: Unable to update Enfold, getting message: Download Failed. Forbidden. #1069250Exact same issue here:
An error occurred while updating Enfold: Download failed. ForbiddenI have previously updated versions using the token, but now cannot update from 4.5.2 to 4.5.4
The update URL is giving this response:
Error> <Code>AccessDenied</Code> <Message>Access denied</Message> </Error>
Multiple users have reported this.
The ENFOLD theme has an update problem.
It needs to be fixed.cPanel includes an FTP application called File Manager.
This application allows you to extract an uploaded ZIP file.
AFAIK normal FTP does not allow you to do this. With the cPanel method you upload ONE file (the ZIP file), then extract it.
With the FTP method you have to upload every file of the theme (100s, maybe 1000s of files?) individually – plenty of room for error with that no matter how good your FTP client is, or how fast your connection is.Uploading one big file is way quicker than uploading 100s of individual files.
Unzipping the ZIP file takes literally a few seconds.Other posters to the multiple threads about v4.5 upgrade issues have mentioned problems with the FTP. method.
The cPanel method has none of those issues. It’s an option. I think it is the best one.
Apologies in advance for all the capitals and bold, but I feel I need to emphasize the issues with what should really be a simple process.
In my opinion, advising people to update via FTP is BAD ADVICE.
Uploading the theme via FTP is SLOW and PRONE TO ERRORS – if only one file is missed in the upload then that can cause errors.
@dianajuhn, this is most likely your problem – a file(s) may have been missed in the FTP upload. If you have cPanel access to your site, here is a QUICK, EASY and RELIABLE way to update your site:
1. Download the “Installable WordPress file only” from your Themeforest account
2. Login to your website’s cPanel – normally found at yourwebsite.com/cpanel
3. Open File Manager and navigate to the \wp-content\themes\ directory of your website
4. Rename the Enfold folder to Enfold-old
5. Upload the ZIP file you downloaded in step 1 to \wp-content\themes\
6. Extract the ZIP file you uploaded in step 5 to \wp-content\themes\
7. Delete the ZIP file you uploaded in step 5
When you check your website’s WordPress admin you will be updated to v4.5.
The previous version of Enfold will still be there – you can delete this if you are happy that the update has worked okay.Hopefully I won’t confuse the update issue further, but by far the easiest and quickest way to update to v4.5 is if you have CPanel access to your site:
The previous version of Enfold will still be there – you can delete this if you are happy that the update has worked okay.@mike:
Thanks for the update instructions.
I have successfully updated to v4.5 via FTPFor anyone reading this thread:
Once you have updated to v4.5, you need to go to Enfold – Theme Update, and generate a Envato private token.
There is a link to instructions for how to do this on the Theme Update page.
Then you enter the token in the field on the Theme Update page and validate it.
You MUST do this to be able to update the theme in future.MODERATORS:
There should be a sticky post created covering BOTH updating to v4.5 AND generating and installing the token after the update.I’m on version 4.2.6
If I DO NOT do the manual update to v4.5, and wait for the next version that supports auto-updating, will it work to auto-update from 4.2.6 to the newest version?
@Dude (Peter)
I’m getting the same update error as OP on my site mooreauctions.com.au:
An error occurred while updating Enfold: Download failed. A valid URL was not provided.I’ve tried both of your fixes and neither have worked. Here are the messages after trying your most recent fix:
The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

Disabling Maintenance mode…
All updates have been completed.
This appears to be a Enfold theme issue and requires a new update with a fix.
Is the theme development team working to fix this?
If so, when can we expect the update to be distributed? -
