One small addition to all the said details with the zip-upload-plugin: you cannot use the enfold-download-zip named “All files & documentation”. You will end up in complaints be the addon that this zip-file does not have a style.css available.
Instead select “Installable WordPress file only” to get the right (even much smaller) zip-file for the update.
