Hello,
I learned after the fact that before starting customization, I should have created a child theme. All the resources I’m finding on creating an Enfold child theme assume that one has not already customized the parent theme in word press. May you please advise on the best steps to go about creating a child theme, following which I can reimplement my customizations? I’m using the Law firm Demo.
Is there a way for me to save/find the customizations I made and save them for later reference when I’m ready to make changes in the child theme? I have All-in-One WP Migration, is there any way to use my backup files to track/find the customizations I made so I can apply to the child theme when ready? Please explain in detail as I’m a newbie and learning about web design as I go. If any of the moderators have any you have any suggestions for youtube (or any other?) tutorials to review for how to do all this properly – please advise. If it’s more efficient for me to delete my theme on WordPress and start the whole process again please advise.
Also is the Child theme linked here the latest version of the child theme?
Thank You!
February 6, 2024 at 8:42 pm #1433349Hey WorldinColor,
What exactly did you customise? If you didn’t change any core theme files, then you can import the settings from the parent theme under Enfold->Import/Export.
The child theme on our site is the latest version.

RikardFebruary 7, 2024 at 5:46 pm #1433519@Rikard – thanks for the prompt response!
I have one Quick CSS to set custom margins/padding for containers, otherwise, the rest of the customizations are changes to default settings via Enfold Theme Options (general layout, general styling, etc.). I also started customizing the content of pages – my main concern is having to start from scratch pasting content on pages, not so much any theme settings.
From what you said (and my response above) I take it I didn’t change any core theme files? Assuming we agree that I didn’t change any core theme files, could you clarify next steps?
Are you suggesting that I do the following:
Under Enfold->Import/Export–> Import Theme Settings File–> Upload the Entire Enfold Zip File I purchased (which will reinstall theme)–> Upload Child theme–>follow steps 2 to 4 of the “Installing Child Theme instructions” in the link below.February 7, 2024 at 7:03 pm #1433539Hi,
When the parent theme is active, then you can export your options. When you have uploaded and activated the child child theme, then you import the file that you exported. Please try that out, and don’t forget to keep a backup of your site before you start.

RikardFebruary 8, 2024 at 10:29 pm #1433743Hi Rikard
Sorry to have to make you break this down. I’m summarizing my process below with my clarifications, please correct anything I have wrong. The plus side of this is that someone else with the same issue in the future will have a detailed instructions for exactly how to do this without messing up so hopefully fewer support tickets on this in future :) Thank you!
High Level Process
Backup site via All-In-One WP Migration plug-in –> Under Enfold->Import/Export–> Export Theme Settings File –> Delete Current Enfold theme –> Delete Pages, Posts, Media, extra plug-ins –> Reset WordPress using “WordPresss Reset” plugin –> Upload the Entire Enfold Zip File I purchased (which will reset theme)–> Upload Child theme–>follow steps 2 to 4 of the “Installing Child Theme instructions” link –> Activate Child theme –> Import Theme Settings file –> Import Website Backup file via All-In-One WP Migration plug-in .After that I’m back in business
February 9, 2024 at 11:28 am #1433792Hi,
Thanks for the update. I’m not sure why you would have to delete/reset things? All you need to do first backup your site, then to download the theme settings file, then import it again once the child theme is active.

RikardFebruary 9, 2024 at 5:33 pm #1433844Hi,
I thought the whole point of the exercise was to have settings only in child theme and I’d be resetting parent theme to original settings? I’m developing the website and in several months will outsource oversight of the website. I don’t want to have any problems at the handoff so wanted to start off with website theme configuration that follows best practices. If you think not resetting the parent theme will not cause any complications down the road when I have to handover oversight of the website, please let me know. Thx!February 9, 2024 at 9:49 pm #1433867Hi,
When the child theme is active, then it doesn’t matter which settings the parent theme has. The child theme settings will be used once it’s active.

RikardFebruary 10, 2024 at 6:55 pm #1433933Understood, thanks for the explanation. I’m getting an “Incompatible Archive” error when I upload the Enfold child theme zip file using WordPress theme installer.
From research (see below links) it seems this is a common issue for mac users. I am using a windows machine and did not modify the zip file – I do not want to do custom code just to get this install to work. Please suggest a workaround.

February 11, 2024 at 11:10 am #1433972Hi,
Please try extracting the child theme on your local computer, then drag the 3 files to a new folder then compress it. Also name the compressed file to the same name as the original file.

RikardFebruary 14, 2024 at 6:55 am #1434255The fix worked and I was able to activate child them without any problems, thanks!

Oops, apologies for the delay. I missed the last part about letting you know you can close -my comment implied it. Please go head and close the ticket.
