Hi, I run Shoutbox Magazine on my website: http://www.themetrorailguy.com
I migrated to a new host. My featured images do not show up on the Home Page or the category page. Eg. https://themetrorailguy.com/category/gurgaon/
Is there a way to fix this?
September 10, 2022 at 1:31 pm #1364524Hey KD,
Thank you for your question, but unfortunately the Shoutbox is no longer supported since 2020 and WordPress 5.0
I see that your site has this error: jQuery.Deferred exception which could mean that you have a plugin causing the error, try disabling all of your plugins, or that you are using the newest WordPress v6+, try downgrading back to v4.8 as your version of Shoutbox was not meant to run on WordPress v5+ If you do downgrade you will need to downgrade your PHP version on your webhost to 7.4, your new host is probably using PHP v8+ which WordPress v4.8 will not run on.
Because of this limitation, there is not much we can do to correct this error. We recommend using a modern theme like Enfold and taking this opportunity to rebuild your site. Unfortunately, your current theme can not be “upgraded” or “imported” into Enfold, you will need to build it from scratch.
Sorry that this is not the answer you were looking for, but this could be a great opportunity to give your site an updated look and feel.Best regards,
MikeSeptember 10, 2022 at 7:58 pm #1364554Hi Mike, thank you so much for your response. I have not made any changes yet. However, when I click on ‘+ new post’, I get the following error: There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.
My current PHP version is 7.3.33 and WordPress Version is 6.0.2.
If I downgrade to WordPress 4.8, will the shoutbox theme be able to run? The only PHP versions I can change to on cPanel are 7.1 and 7.2
Just wanted to clarify before I downgrade to WordPress 4.8. I don’t want it to break the site.
Thanks!
September 10, 2022 at 8:36 pm #1364562Hi,
Thank you for your feedback, I would recommend a full backup using your webhost backup options, please don’t use a backup plugin unless you have specific knowledge on restoring it. Many backup plugins fail on restore.
If you are using PHP v7.3 with WordPress v6.0.2 then a critical error would be expected as WordPress requires a minimum of v7.4.
If you have disabled all plugins, downgrading to WordPress 4.8 should would correctly as the shoutbox theme was not designed to work with any higher version of WordPress.
Please note that you will open yourself to security issues using WordPress v4.8, this should be ok if you do it temporarily while you are creating your new site, but it is not a long term solution.Best regards,
MikeSeptember 10, 2022 at 8:43 pm #1364563Thanks again Mike! I took a look at the compatibility chart here: https://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/references/php-compatibility-and-wordpress-versions/
Can I do the following after backing up to resolve the critical error as well as the image error?
1. First downgrade to PHP to v7.2
2. Then downgrade WordPress to v4.9.21 (or would you recommend 4.8?)Thanks
KDSeptember 10, 2022 at 9:04 pm #1364565Hi,
WordPress to v4.9.21, will probably work but I don’t recall when the jQuery version changed in the core WordPress, it was just about v4.8 – v4.9
I would try v4.8 first, you can always go up to v4.9.21 later, I would just hope to get you to a stable version first 🙂Best regards,
MikeSeptember 10, 2022 at 9:51 pm #1364569Thanks Mike. I switched to PHP 7.1 and WP 4.8, and that did the trick. Now the images are loading and I can access the ‘New Post’ page.
However, when I go to add a new post, the editor is super old. When I type something in the post body, the text doesn’t show up. Only when I highlight it using the mouse can I see what I’ve written. remember using a block editor with my old host. Is there a way to get that back?
September 10, 2022 at 10:02 pm #1364570I’m looking through my notes. I was using WordPress v5.4.2. I switched to it using WP Downgrade, but again – I cannot access the New Post page. Is there a way to go back to using it?
September 10, 2022 at 10:12 pm #1364571Hi,
Glad to hear that you have this sorted out, but unfortunately, the block editor is only available with WordPress v5+
We stopped supporting our older themes when the block editor was introduced with WordPress v5 because it would require a full rewrite of the theme to make it compatible.
Please see this post.Best regards,
MikeSeptember 10, 2022 at 10:20 pm #1364572I understand, which is why I’m wondering how I got it to work in the past. It used to work well. The new editor is useless :(
And now that I have downgraded to 4.8, I see spacings within existing posts have increased making them not so pleasing. Eg: https://themetrorailguy.com/2022/09/04/all-turnouts-cast-for-bangalore-metros-whitefield-extension/
I love the Shoutbox theme, but I guess it’s time to retire it. Do you have any suggestions for something similar?
