This is a “pre sale” question in that to do what I hope to do I clearly need to buy a new Enfold license. But first, I have questions.

I have an “old” site currently running WP 4.7.21 and Enfold 4.0.2. I would like to upgrade both to current versions (WP 5.8.2 and Enfold 4.8.8.1) but is there even a migration path to do that? Or would I have to start from scratch with the latest versions and rebuild the site content?

If there is a migration path, what is it?

For example, reading your site I get the impression that Enfold 4.8.8.1 may not be fully compatible with pre 5.x WordPress. Would that mean that I need to purchase an earlier version of Enfold to install now on WP 4.7.21, under which I then upgrade WP to and through the WP5.x transition? And then upgrade Enfold from there to its current version?

How do Enfold version updates even happen? I see nothing in my current Admin back-end to upgrade Enfold from its current 4.0.2 version.

Or should I just let WP go through its own process to upgrade to WP 5.8.2, then install Enfold 4.8.8.1 as, in effect, a new theme – and then switch to it? And if I do, what are the odds of my current site coming through that process intact?

You get the idea. With the understanding that I expect to have to purchase a new Enfold license, what is the best way for me to get from where I am now to where I hope to go?

    Thank you

    Hi Brian,

The update to 4.8.x has to be done manually from the version you are running, please refer to my replies in this thread: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/enfold-4-5-theme-update-update-failed-download-failed-a-valid-url-was-not-pro/#post-1021541

You can either update manually via FTP: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/how-to-install-enfold-theme/#theme-update, or use a plugin to upload the theme zip file: https://wordpress.org/plugins/update-theme-and-plugins-from-zip-file/

If that doesn’t work then please try to delete the whole theme folder, then replace it with the new version. Make sure that you have backups of the site before starting updating.

Also please read this after you have updated: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/theme-registration/

You might want to copy the site to a staging area and update there first.

    Best regards,
    Rikard

    Hi Rickard,

Thank you for responding so quickly!

    1. Do backups and set up a copy and test first in a staging area? Will do.

    2. Should I do the WP updates first? Then the new Enfold theme?

2A: If WP first, should I switch the site theme to something generic, like maybe WordPress Twenty-Twenty, while updating WP itself. And then switch to the latest Enfold theme once WP is fully up-to-date? Or can I just leave the old Enfold 4.0.2 in place until I get WP fully updated?

2B: If I should install the new theme first, can I do that on top of the current WP 4.7.21? Or do I need to get WP updated to a certain version before switching to the current Enfold version?

    3. I am comfortable doing the theme update manually via ftp.

    Best Regards,
    Brian

    Hi Brian,

I would suggest that you update WordPress to the latest version first of all on the staging site. If you should run into problem with the old version of the theme after that, then you can rename the folder via FTP. After that you can upload the new version in a temporary folder, then rename it to enfold once the upload is done.

    Best regards,
    Rikard
