I’ve searched and see the recommendation was to enable Akismet to stop spam bots form filling out the Enfold forms, widget forms. But they simply keep coming in, 3 a day now.
Here is an example:

March 3, 2019 at 9:19 am #1073866Hey Daniel,
This should be fixed in the latest version of the theme, could you try to update to 4.5.4 please? The update to 4.5.x has to be done manually from the version you are running, please refer to my replies in this thread: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/enfold-4-5-theme-update-update-failed-download-failed-a-valid-url-was-not-pro/#post-1021541
You can either update manually via FTP: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/how-to-install-enfold-theme/#theme-update, or use a plugin to upload the theme zip file: https://wordpress.org/plugins/update-theme-and-plugins-from-zip-file/
If that doesn’t work then please try to delete the theme folder, then upload it again like you usually would. Also make sure to have proper backups in order before you start updating.
Also please read this after you have updated: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/theme-registration/
Best regards,
RikardMarch 3, 2019 at 9:31 pm #1074043I logged into cpanel, file manager and deleted the enfold folder, and added the new version. It threw errors: Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/hidden/public_html/wp-content/themes/enfold/includes/helper-post-format.php on line 213
I rolled the old folder back for now, but whats the fix for this??
March 4, 2019 at 2:49 pm #1074388Hi vegaspro,
I not sure but I think that deleting through cPanel takes a bit of time, so the old theme files might not have been deleted when you uploaded the new version. If you should need help with updating then please include admin WordPress and FTP login details in private, along with a verification that you have backups of the the site.

RikardMarch 4, 2019 at 6:13 pm #1074462No, deleting through cpanel is instant and its the exact same as using ftp. In fact we never use FTP and we have replaced enfold folder versions before without issue.
So when i take your most recent enfold version zip and extract it, the site breaks with that error. Please investigate the error. For now I have put the original Enfold folder back so that the site functions at least.

March 6, 2019 at 6:19 am #1075291Hi vegaspro,
Thanks for the update. This is not a general issue, it’s local to your site, so we would have to have access to your site in order to check it.
Best regards,

The php error is caused by a very old and outdated php version (< 5.4).
Check http://php.net/supported-versions.php.
To fix: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/fatal-error-54/#post-1067379
There had been many security fixes in the last php version. It is highly recommended to upgrade.
Could be a reason for the spams.Best regards,
GünterMarch 8, 2019 at 7:25 pm #1076443That is simply not true. LOOK at the screen shot (private area) which shows which version of PHP the site is running on.
March 9, 2019 at 2:37 pm #1076761Hi,
Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/hidden/public_html/wp-content/themes/enfold/includes/helper-post-format.php on line 213
This is the line:
$hide_featured_image = empty( get_post_meta(get_the_ID(), '_avia_hide_featured_image', true ) ) ? false : true;
http://php.net/manual/de/function.empty.php
See Changelog:
Prior 5.5.0 this function did not support expressions like get_post_meta(). That is the reason for the fatal error.
SInce 5.5.0 it does.So you must have a version prior 5.5.0 – Check with your hoster.
If you have version 7.x this error does not occur (otherwise we would have thousands of bug reports).Best regards,

Please check https://kriesi.at/support/topic/new-message-sent-by-contact-form-at-enfold/#post-1077914.
As it is only 5-10 spams it seems to be a human being and not a bot doing it.

GünterMarch 20, 2019 at 10:51 pm #1081079hi! i recently (March 10th) updated to the latest version and since then have received over 1,500 spam comments on a blog post. before the update, i’m not sure that i ever got a comment – as i do have them disabled. i’m also unable to bulk delete them or mark as spam, i get an error message that the website “unexpectedly closed its connection”. i haven’t had this issue with my other websites so not sure what is happening here. help!
March 26, 2019 at 3:01 am #1082935Hi!
Are there any spam protection plugins like Akismet installed in the site? These plugins should filter out spams, delete existing ones or block them completely. A good list of plugins can be found in the following article.
