Hi
I need to upgrade a site that was built a few years ago. Ideally I want to do this without breaking the current site layout. At the moment the site is using Enfold theme 3.0.8 running on WordPress 4.1.25. My main objective is to upgrade WordPress in order to deploy the latest version of Contact Form 7.My questions are:
1. Could I safely upgrade WordPress to current (5.0.3) whilst leaving Enfold 3.0.8 as the active theme?
2. If not, is there any recommended update sequence for updating the theme or can I go straight from Enfold 3.0.8 to current version (4.5?) without breaking site layout?
I’d be grateful for any guidance about how best to manage such an update.
Thanks

We can’t say if you are going to have problems or, but running the latest version of WordPress with 3.0.8 is probably not a very good idea. I would suggest that you do the update on a staging version of the site first to see if you run into any problems. Update the theme first, then WordPress.

RikardFebruary 8, 2019 at 9:32 am #1064485Hi again,
I forgot to mention that the update to 4.5.x has to be done manually from the version you are running, please refer to my replies in this thread: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/enfold-4-5-theme-update-update-failed-download-failed-a-valid-url-was-not-pro/#post-1021541
You can either update manually via FTP: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/how-to-install-enfold-theme/#theme-update, or use a plugin to upload the theme zip file: https://wordpress.org/plugins/update-theme-and-plugins-from-zip-file/
If none of those methods work then please try to completely delete the theme files via FTP, then upload the new version.
Also please read this thread: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/updating-to-enfold-4-5-and-validating-personal-token/

RikardMarch 26, 2019 at 7:50 pm #1083228Hello again. Been a while since you advised me, but only just got around to trying the upgrade.
So, I attempted theme update via FTP.
Deleted all 3.0.8 theme files.
Then uploaded an (unzipped) version of Enfold 4.5, as per your instructions.
(At this stage, still running on WordPress 4.1.25).
Attempted to return to WP Admin area to activate theme, but nothing – ‘white screen of death’ – no admin area (and no web site either, of course).
So, restored my back-up of Enfold 3.0.8.
Admin area starts functioning again. Web site functioning again.
Where do I go from here? If upgrade kills admin area can’t activate theme.
I’d be grateful for any further help you can provide.
Thank you.March 27, 2019 at 12:06 pm #1083527Hi,
Thank you for contacting us.
Once you are able to get into wordpress admin please try to download only the installable theme files from themeforest and upload the zip file from WordPress dashboard ( After deleting the old theme folder via FTP and deactivating all plugins).
If you are updating via FTP please make sure you are uploading only the extracted enfold folder.
If you still have any issue please delete the old theme folder, deactivate all plugins and share the WordPress admin details with FTP info so we can take a closer look at it.
Best regards,

Sorry for the late reply, Thank you for the FTP access, I uploaded the new theme as “enfold-new” and renamed your current theme to “enfold-old” then renamed the new one to “enfold”. But I got a HTTP ERROR 500, this was your error_log error:[30-Mar-2019 21:52:03 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function apply_filters_deprecated() in /home/pprtwdpz/public_html/wp/wp-content/themes/enfold/framework/php/class-framework-widgets.php on line 2578
I switched back to your old theme and removed the widgets from your footer and sidebar, and tried again, and again I got the error. I see all for your plugin were disabled so I don’t know why you got this.
I believe you are going to need to update WordPress first backup your whole site, and remove your widgets and plugins, then try switching to a WordPress core theme and update to v5.1.1 then rename your current theme to “enfold-old” and rename “enfold-new” to “enfold” then activate it, hopefully this will work.I search for this error and only found that it should be a plugin widget, but I had tried removing these.
Please let us know if this works for you.Best regards,
Mike -
