I’m trying to update my theme and keep getting this message:
Warning: Illegal string offset ‘api_error’ in /home/mmaa9550/public_html/wp-content/themes/enfold/framework/php/auto-updates/class-envato-protected-api.php on line 307I don’t know what this means or how to work around it? Can you help?

Which version of the theme are you currently using?
If it’s less than Enfold 4.5 you have to update manually, I recommend using FTP.So basically you make a full backup of your website, upload the new Enfold folder into the themes directory, name it “enfold-new” (or similar) and then rename your current enfold folder to something else. If the new version has been uploaded successfully, you can rename this one to “enfold” again and your theme should be up to date again.

You can either update manually via FTP: https://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/how-to-install-enfold-theme/#theme-update, or use a plugin to upload the theme zip file: https://wordpress.org/plugins/update-theme-and-plugins-from-zip-file/
