When updating one of my licensed installs I am having issues updating. Going from 4.2 to 5.2

I tried updating automatically, nope. Tried doing what is in the article here https://kriesi.at/support/topic/update-problem-4/?login_error#post-1035011 with the Update From Zip plugin, failed. So I tried doing an FTP upload of the theme but when I replace the Enfold parent with the new files I get a white screen of death.

I attempted this 3 times, once with Enfold Child and plugins activated, once with just the plugins deactivated, once with both plugins and Enfold deactivated using the WP TwentySeventeen theme activated.

    Any suggestions?

how did you upload the folder to your themes folder. Overwrite the files or a complete new upload.

I do alway update via ftp but i do not overwrite files. I rename my enfold folder to enfold-old and upload the newest enfold folder then.
    see here some hints: https://kriesi.at/support/topic/some-hints-and-advice-to-update-enfold/#post-1022056

This method has a big advantage because there is always a rollback folder if something went wrong.

I had a backup so I just overwrote.

    #1055258

Do please a complete new upload. Not overwriting an existing enfold folder.
That is what that plugin “Update Theme and Plugins from Zip File” does if you mark to “Enable saving a backup copy of old version… “

Actually I did that as well on the third try. I renamed the Enfold, and the Enfold Child folders to .old. same result.

The child is always the same. And does not need to update. That is just the trick – to keep all the changes you have made to the theme.
So now you have on your themes folder an enfold , enfold-old and enfold-child-old folder but no enfold-child folder ?
What was the last theme you have activated before the wsod ?

    Guenni,

Perhaps I’m not explaining this properly. On the first attempt with enfold child as the active theme I attempted to update with Update From Zip. That failed, but the site was up and fine.

I then tried to update the via ftp, over writing the enfold folder. Result wsod. Restored Backup.

Activated twenty seventeen, renamed the enfold folder, uploaded the new version, when I activated enfold wsod. Restored backup.

Repeated this and renamed both enfold and enfold child, renamed the child folder back, activated it, wsod.

I know how child themes work. I tried it just to be sure. I have 30 active licenses and this is the only one getting the wsod.

What php Version is running on that system.
I got a lot of customers which have older php versions before – and that’s something you sometimes forget to check when reinstalling. Because as far as I’m concerned the new enfold only runs correctly from php versions 7.

As I am telling he support guys in a private message, this is on a managed WP server (which is what I think is the cause) and that it is WP Version 5.0.3
PHP 7.2. Other info was provided to them that I won’t share publicly.
