    Deat Enfold Team,
Is it possible to have all subdirectories equals, i.e. all without language mention xxx/EN, xxx/FR, xxx/IT. I started from my main site in FR and this one doens’t have any language mention: Is it opssible to put it there too ?
Thank you for your help and best regards,
    Natacha

    Hey HulaSlim,

    Thank you for the inquiry.

Are you trying to remove the language path or directory? By default, this is not possible, and even if it were, we wouldn’t recommend doing it because the language path is how the plugin distinguishes which language to display. However, you can designate a subdomain for each language or add the language name as a query parameter instead. Please go to the WPML > Languages section then look for the Language URL format settings.

If you’re trying to append the language path for the default language, please try the instructions provided in the following documentation.

    // https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/language-url-options/#displaying-your-sites-default-language-in-a-directory

    Hi Ismael,
    Thank you for your answer.
Maybe I was a little confusing.
So I started with a main site in french. After it was done, I cloned it in 2 subdirectories which I called /EN and /IT. So my question is: can I also call the main site /FR ?
    Thanks
    Best regards,

    Hi,

    Thank you for the clarification.

Have you tried doing the following steps?

1.) In the “Languages” settings, go to the “Language URL format” section, and choose the “Different languages in directories” option.

2.) Under the “Language URL format” section, you’ll see an option to “Use directory for default language.” Make sure this option is enabled. WPML will automatically append the language code (FR) to the URLs for the default language.

If this didn’t work, try to adjust the rules in the .htaccess file but we are not sure if this is going to work with WPML.

    // https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/215747748-How-can-I-redirect-and-rewrite-my-URLs-with-an-htaccess-file-

IMPORTANT: Please make sure to create a site backup before doing the steps above.

You may want to reach out to the plugin developers for more information.

    Best regards,
    Ismael

    Hi Ismale,
I don’t work with WPML: all my sites are sub-directories that I translated on my own (I’m a translartor).
Is there a way to work the /FR url for the main site in this situation ?
    Thanks again for checking,
    Have a good day

    Hi,

    I don’t work with WPML

Sorry for the confusion. Have you tried adjusting the permalink of the home page, or adjust home URL in the Settings > General panel? Please make sure to create a site backup or restore point before doing any of this.

    Dear Ismael,
    Thank you for your explanation.
I understood how to do it, I just have three questions before.
    1. Is a snapshot enough to restore the site in case something goes wrong ? Because you talked about creating a backup, and I don’t know how to do it.
    2. Will http://www.guidedtour.ch still be my main site and the others sub-domains of it ?
    3. My visit card show http://www.guidedtour.ch, so if clients type that, how are they going to land to the right place ? Is it going to be according to the language they’re using ?
    Thank s again,
    Best regards,
    Natacha

    Hi,

    Thank you for the update.

1.) This depends on your hosting provider. You may need to ask them for additional assistance regarding the restore point or backup.

2-3.) You will need to set up a 301 redirect from the main site to the desired subdomain. Users will be redirected to this subdomain regardless of their language. Implementing a function to automatically detect the user’s language would require additional customization, which, unfortunately, is beyond the scope of our support.

    Best regards,
    Ismael
