Hi,
I noticed last week that one of the 2 sites I use the Enfold theme with suffered a breakdown seemingly after running an update via the WordPress / Enfold / theme update option. I had been doing it this way for at least a year. I then downloaded a fresh Enfold theme folder from ThemeForest and manually uploaded it using Transmit, that resolved the issue!
So now there is a new Enfold theme update. Moving forward, what is the better approach? Update via WordPress or manually using Transmit?
Perspectives and Insights appreciated,
Thanks!

July 29, 2021 at 11:06 pm #1313338this is my method on updating when there are some major updates. :
https://kriesi.at/support/topic/some-hints-and-advice-to-update-enfold/#post-1056107The big advantage of that is – that you always have a rollback version in the backhand.
But it is less fast than the WordPress method. On former times when upgrading some “bug fix versions” i used the plugin “update Themes and Plugins from zip file”
– but on newer WordPress Version this method is adopted by WordPress.
Go To Themes and klick add New.
On uploading the new Enfold.zip file – WordPress will check if an older Version of Enfold is installed. If yes – it will ask you what to do!
But one of the safest ways is the first one via ftp

Thanks, yes I too used to follow the FTP method you outline, then I switched to updating from within WordPress which worked without a hiccup for a year or two until last week.So I am tempted to return back to the original method which at the expense of time does provide the old theme as a revert to option.
Wondering what the theme developers opinion is on this issue?
Thanks,

Updating via WordPress is the simple option I guess, and that should work as expected. I’m not sure what problem you had on one of your sites though, could you try to explain what happened a bit further please?

Sure, so I noticed after doing a theme update from within wordpress that my site no longer looked right at all, hard to describe, but all the look and feel was gone, almost seemed like a generic blog posts and links. Was this way with all the browsers, so I called my hosting provider who looked at it and said it seemed like the style sheets could have been corrupted.
They suggested that I download a fresh copy of the theme from Theme Forest and manually upload it via FTP (I use Transmit). Which is how I used to update my enfold theme. Anyways, I did that and it resolved all the problems and the site went back to normal.
So the theory is that the process of updating the them from within WordPress may have caused the issue?
Are you saying that I should not have any concern in doing it this way?
I guess the one advantage of updating via FTP is that I can make a copy of the older version of the theme first incase I need to return to it for some reason?

If the update was made via WordPress or manually via FTP should not affect what you are describing. It sounds more like a caching or minification problem. If this should happen again, then please make sure that you clear all caches from plugins, the server, and local browser. Also make sure that the option to delete old CSS and JS files is activated under Enfold->Performance. You can disable that option again once this are back to normal.

I do use a caching plugin (lite speed) and noticed that “Delete old CSS and JS Files” WAS activated. So I just de – activated it. According to what you were saying, perhaps this was the issue?
August 6, 2021 at 6:28 am #1314759Hi,
Thanks for the update, it might have been the issue yes. If this should happen again, then please try to disable all caching from your plugin, then disable file compression in the theme, and activate the option to delete old CSS and JS files. If the site is working as it should after that, then you can enable your settings back to the way they were before.
