Greetings,
I’m about to upgrade from Enfold 2.4.5 and WP 3.8.8 to the latest version of both (3.1.5 / 4.2.2), and I wanted to seek some advice on the best way to go about it with minimal losses or issues. For the record, I’m using a child theme.
One of the issues I expect to face is with widgets, which starting from WP 4.2 require a unique ID. One of the moderators in another thread suggested upgrading the theme first and then WP. I assume that in that order Enfold will generate IDs which then WP will be able to access?
The other issue is maintaining theme settings. I understand that from Enfold 2.6 and on an import/export option was added. Would it be advisable to upgrade to 2.6 first, export the settings, and then upgrade to 3.1.5? If so, would it be possible to receive a copy of 2.6 to upgrade with?
Are there any other suggestions anyone can offer to make the process smoother and as bug-free as possible?
Thanks in advance!
Hi form2function!
Thank you for using Enfold.
Since you’re using a very old version of the theme, you may need to reconfigure the theme options and recreate broken elements on the theme. The section that will surely break is the header because of the new header configurator. Any modified templates (like header.php, single.php etc) in the child theme will need proper modifications as well. The sidebar should be OK unless you used special characters in the custom widget area name. You might find misplaced widgets.
Please create a backup before updating the theme.
Cheers!
