I inherited a site that was built without using a child theme. I think that my current version of Enfold (2.3.1) is no longer compatible with WordPress 4.0.1. I’ve done heavy modification of the css file, and have changed a few other files as well, including the header and footer. How do I update the theme without losing all my work? I can create a child theme now and put the modified files into that folder, but I really don’t want to lose my work. Thanks so much.

    Hey Sarah-B!

Yes, version 2.3.1 is very old and not compatible with WordPress 4+.
Please refer to this post and create a testing environment – http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/move-from-a-local-installation-to-a-live-server/ and then download pre-built Enfold child theme here – http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/downloads/
You can add your custom CSS codes into Style.css file of your child theme and you can apply the changes you made on Footer.php to the same file. For the changes you made on Header.php file, please use Enfold/includes/helper-main-menu.php file. You can use this website to check the differences between files – https://www.diffchecker.com/
