Hey Kriesi and Enfold community! I manually updated from Enfold 4.2 to 4.5.7 and it broke our client’s website at http://www.asb-service.de. Several modules stopped working, their shortcodes being displayed on the front end instead.

This happened on e.g. the Services > Verpflegung & Catering page. The website is now fine again after rolling back to 4.2.

    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Log into a version of the website running Enfold 4.2
    2. Install “Update Theme and Plugins from Zip File” plugin
    3. Update Enfold theme ro 4.5.7 from zip file
    4. Check “Services” > “Verpflegung & Catering” page

    Screenshots – before:

    Screenshots – after:
    http://tinypic.com/r/4lg31z/9
    http://tinypic.com/r/t8ta43/9

The same happened on some other pages on the same website too, where some photos stopped working in the same manner. Repro rate seems 100%.

Can you suggest/implement a fix? I made a staging environment that has Enfold 4.2, i.e., everything’s fine. I installed the “Update from zip” plugin for ya, feel free to experiment. :-) Access data attached.

    Thanks,
    Matt @ 2SINN.com

    Hi Matt

Have you also already tried to update Enfold directly via FTP?
If you make a backup first, then upload the newest version of Enfold to the themes folder (call it “enfold-new”).

Afterwards, delete the “enfold” folder and rename “enfold-new” back to “enfold”.
Like this you can make sure that no old theme files are hanging around somewhere (not sure if that is also the case if you are using this plugin).

    Cheers and good luck
    Michael

Hey Michael, thanks for your reply. I just tried that and the result was exactly the same, unfortunately.

    Hi,

Sorry for the problem. Which version of PHP are you running on the server? Did you make sure that the problem was not caching (since you are running caching plugins)?

    Best regards,
    Rikard

    #1115100

Hey Rikard! The PHP versions are:

    • On my localhost: 7.3
    • On the staging environment at asbstaging.2sinn.com: 7.2.19
    • On the live site: 7.0.33-1~dotdeb+8.1

The issue occurs on all 3 environments regardless of whether the caching plugins are on or off.

    Hi,

Thanks for the update, if there would be a general problem with the theme on the PHP versions you are listing then all of our customers and ourselves would have the same problem. That is not the case, so it’s likely something local to your site. I see that you are running the latest version of the theme on the staging site, but I can’t see anything obviously wrong with the page in private. How exactly can we reproduce the problems you are having?

    Best regards,
    Rikard

Hey Rikard, my apologies for the late response. Thanks so much for looking into this.

The Steps to Reproduce and admin user login data in my original post don’t work for you? On my end, by switching back and forth between the new and old versions of the theme, the issue is 100% reproducible.

I just followed the exact StR from my OP again and the issue occurred again.

Currently, v4.2 of Enfold is active on http://asbstaging.2sinn.com. I also have v4.5.7 uploaded via FTP to its own directory, it’s selectable in the Themes section.

EDIT/ADDENDUM: the issue also perists when I deactivate all plugins.

    Hi,

Thanks for the update, I see the problem now. I see that you are using underscores in your class names. This is not a valid character in CSS and might be the cause of the layout breaking.

    asb_content_link

Could you try to change all underscores to regular dashes please?

    Best regards,
    Rikard

Hey Rikard! I just changed the CSS class of one of the modules on the affected page to “asb-content-link” and the issue persists:

Please note that the issue also occurs on other pages, e.g.:

The shortcodes also appear in the back-end in the Avia Builder itself:

    Hi,

    Thank you for the update.

We enabled the debug mode and the shortcode parser and it fixed the builder issue, but the shortcodes “av_content_links” and “asb_heading” are still not rendering properly. How did you add those shortcodes? They are not from the theme. (see private field)

    Best regards,
    Ismael

Hi Ismael! You’re right, these two modules (“Content Links” and “Überschrift mit Button”) do not seem to belong to the standard Avia Layout Builder – I just cross-checked with another site we’ve built and neither of them are there.

I wonder if perhaps, when this site was built, we worked with a developer to custom-code these two modules? I don’t quite know, it was before my time, but I will investigate this with my colleagues next week.

In the meantime, can you think of a way to preserve their functionality in the latest version of Enfold, or is our best recourse to keep using 4.2?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

We cant help on this one unfortunately. We always ask our users to update mostly as because of security.

Hey Krisi team, thanks for helping us investigate and identify the issue. We have now solved it by replacing the custom modules by regular ones that come with the builder by default, and now the update works.
