Guess I should’ve been better about updating this site but when I went from 3.6 to 4.1.2 it crashed the site and all I got was an error message. (which I didn’t save – my bad). I tried it twice both times using ftp. Got any ideas? Do I need to install versions step by step? If so which ones do I need to do?

You should not have to do incremental updates, though I think we will need some more information as to what is going wrong to be able to help you out? You might want to consider performing the updates on a staging site first so that you don’t have to worry about having your production site down.
