It appears the LayerSlider built into the Enfold theme cannot be updated without a purchase code. I tried my purchase code used to buy Enfold, through Envato/ThemeForest, but that did not work. It may be that the purchase code must be through Code Canyon. Is this so? Is it not possible to update the LayerSlider as part of the purchase of Enfold?

No, unfortunately not. It does only work when you use LayerSlider as a standalone plugin.
When LayerSlider authors update the plugin, Kriesi tests it first and then include with each upcoming update.Best regards,
