I am trying to change the default Attachment Display Settings for images shared through my WordPress installation from Medium to Large.

I have carefully followed the instructions on this page:
    https://www.isitwp.com/set-default-attachment-display-settings-alignment-link-size-wordpress/

When I check the ‘wp-admin/options.php’ page, I can clearly see that ‘image_default_size’ has now been set to Large.

But it doesn’t seem to make a difference to the default Attachment Display Settings when I attempt to add an image to a post, which still comes up as Medium.

I’m losing my mind over this simple issue. Can anybody assist?

    Hey kevinraposo7,
I tested this on my demo site and the options.php showed the change and the default Attachment Display Settings for images was also set to large, for simple posts in the classic & block editors and in Advanced Layout Builder pages using the image element.
I noticed that for some of my images that were smaller than 1030px the default setting was then “Full”.
I tested the code snippet in my child theme functions.php and in the WP Code plugin in a PHP snippet type.
So I’m not sure why this might not be working for you, perhaps you have a plugin or other code snippet conflict?
Perhaps you are testing on a post and image that was already saved? Try creating a new post and select a new image from the media library or upload a new image, both of these worked for me.

    Best regards,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

    Thank you for the response.

I followed your suggestion and tried creating a completely new post instead of updating an existing one, and the problem persists.

As you mentioned, when I added the code snippet to my Enfold ‘functions.php’ file, I do correctly see the changes reflected on the ‘options.php’ page. See private content attachment.

I even tried using the same WP Code plugin you used to create a PHP snippet, and the problem persists. The attachment display settings remain stuck at ‘medium’ instead of ‘large’. See private content attachment.

Happy to share access to the website if it helps troubleshoot.

    Hi,
Did you try disabling all of your plugins?
If you include a admin login I will take a look, but I will also probably want to temporarily disable things while I test.

    Best regards,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Just tried that. Disabled all plugins and then tried (a) creating a new post and (b) editing an existing post.

Still no change. The image attachment settings still default to ‘medium’.

I’ve included administrator credentials in the private section, if you don’t mind having a look.

    Hi,
Thanks but I get the error: Connection denied by IP2Location Country Blocker

    Best regards,
    Mike

My apologies for that – try again now, I disabled the plugin in question!

    Hi,
Thanks for the login, when I add a new post and add a image:
    Enfold_Support_4079.jpeg
and select an image the default size is large:
    Enfold_Support_4082.jpeg
I tested this a few times, I also tested the image element in the ALB:
    Enfold_Support_4084.jpeg
and it also worked, I know that you said that you are not using the ALB and only the Classic Editor, so I was just testing.
    Enfold_Support_4086.jpeg
so try using the Add Media button on a new post:
    Enfold_Support_4079.jpeg

    Best regards,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Thank you for sharing and for having a look.

My experience is completely different from yours, I tried both methods (add media and the advanced layout editor) and both result in ‘medium’ default image size.

Please see the private content section – I’ve included a one-minute video and screen recording showing step-by-step what I’m trying and what seems to be happening.

    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thanks for the video, I don’t know why you are experiencing this, but it’s working for me, please see the video linked below. There is no sound so please watch the mouse, I used the same images as you did in your video.
Try testing with the login you gave us.

    Best regards,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

What a strange situation. When I tried logging in with the account I created for you, it works perfectly.

I can’t imagine how or why this settings would be user-specific when I am adjusting core PHP files such as ‘functions.php’. Do you have any suggestions on how I might be able to fix this without creating a new account?

    Appreciate your help.

    Hi,
Strange, I can’t imagine how it would be user-specific, are you using any “user role” plugins? Are you a “superuser”, although I don’t think that would matter because this works on my test site where I’m a superuser.
Do you have any other hack functions installed?
I don’t know, but I don’t think this is a theme issue as we don’t have any user specific settings, we let WordPress handle this.

    Best regards,
    Mike

Thanks, Mike. I think we’ve exhausted all options here from a theme perspective, I will explore other avenues at this point. Appreciate your help.
