    Hello,
    I have been using version 2.8.1 since I originally installed Enfold.

    I did NOT create a child theme and I have done some minor css edits, so I was afraid to update the theme out of fear that it would cause issues.

    I updated to WordPress 4.0 today. Now I am unable to use the Advanced Layout Editor or to edit Widgets. So I need to update the theme.

    How can I update to the latest version of Enfold without losing my customizations or causing other issues?

    Thanks for your help!

    Did you add your css edits under General Styling -> Quick CSS? If so, can’t you just copy the contents out and then replace after updating the theme? I use a third party plugin (Simple Custom CSS by John Regan) so I don’t run into this issue and can just overwrite at will.

    Thanks for the tip.

    I used Quick CSS and I also manually edited style.css and header.php in the Editor.

    I just copied over a few of the updated theme files via ftp. It fixed some of the problems, but it also caused other issues. Just not sure exactly which files I should copy over and which ones not to copy.

    Any suggestions?

    If it was me, I’d just take a backup of all the old files, copy out the Quick CSS and update.. and then see what’s fixed and what’s broken and since you know it was just a few files you manually edited, it should be pretty easy to create a child theme at that point and fix.

    Unfortunately, there’s not really a better way to do it once the parent theme files have been updated.

    Hi!

    Thanks for the help wolfdogg.

    @seaventures
    , That’s the way I would do it as well. Create a backup and update the theme and then add your customizations into a child theme one by one.

    See here for a starter child theme you can use, http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/downloads/.

    Best regards,
    Elliott
