Hi guys, kind of a stupid question, but one I want to ask just to make sure.

I just updated my website to the newest version of Enfold (4.6.3.1) but the theme itself isn’t active. Only the child theme is technically active, and its there to prevent CSS code and settings from being wiped when the theme is updated.

When you update the theme, do the changes in the update reflect on the child theme as well, even though the child theme itself (which is active), technically wasn’t “updated”. Seems like a rookie question (esp for someone building websites for years), but one that I never asked, and I’m wondering how exactly that works.

    Thanks,
    -Daniel

Facing the same issue currently. Would like to know more on this as well.

    A follow-up question.

On one site, I just uploaded the new version of the theme and it automatically erased the previous version and updated.

On another site, I tried doing the same thing and it says “destination folder already exists”. In both cases I’m running child themes. Can I delete the theme itself (the older version) and just upload the newest one right after?

Original question still stands btw. Thank you so much for you help!

    Hi Daniel,

A child theme is used to keep changes intact during update, a child theme only overrides the parent. It will never be updated unless you do it manually.

If you have problems updating the parent theme, then yes, you can delete the old parent folder and then upload the new one after that. Please keep backups of the site in case something should go wrong before doing this though.

    Best regards,
    Rikard

So, as long as the main theme is updated, even though it is not technically “active”, the child theme and thus the site, will be updated?

Just looking to confirm so I understand it fully

    Hi Dzimnikov,

Yes, it is correct. If you copied some files from the parent theme, then you’ll need to update them manually in the child theme.

    Best regards,
    Victoria
