Actually, the following should be known, since it has already been often thematized here. But headings like “white screen of death” or requests for downloads of older versions make it necessary to point this out again.
A more time consuming method but the safest way to update Enfold is to use the ftp upload.
To have a backup of the previous version for a rollback, login to your root directory via ftp.
After unpacking the downloaded zip file rename the new enfold folder to enfold-new.
Upload this folder to the themes folder.
When this is done, you can rename the still active enfold folder to enfold-old and rename the enfold-new folder to enfold. This could be done via your ftp-client program.
Ideally by that method the page should be offline only for a few seconds. Now see if your site works according to your wishes.
Individual inconsistencies can certainly be clarified here on board. If you have a page that doesn’t work anymore you can rename the Enfold folder to e.g. enfold-neweset and rename the older folder back to enfold.
Then it is possible to search for the reasons for the behaviour without sending the life site offline.
Summary:
- Update via ftp.
- Rename the downloaded newest version to enfold-new
- Upload that enfold-new folder to the themes folder
- Rename your enfold folder to f.e. enfold-old
- Rename your enfold-new folder to enfold
- Check if all your existing settings work to your full satisfaction. Yes – then stop here
- No – delete or rename back the enfold folder back to enfold-new
- rename the enfold-old folder back to enfold

LinOctober 17, 2018 at 8:16 am #1022610Hi,
Thanks @guenni007 for sharing and for helping out. This plugin should also allow you to install the .zip file downloaded from Themeforest without having to delete anything: https://wordpress.org/plugins/update-theme-and-plugins-from-zip-file/
Best regards,
RikardJanuary 20, 2019 at 10:46 am #1056107the procedure above has one big advantage:
Uploading the new theme takes a little time; if all goes well, the page will only be offline for the small amount of time that it will be renamed.- Update via ftp.
- Rename the downloaded newest version to enfold-new
- Upload that enfold-new folder to the themes folder
- Rename your enfold folder to f.e. enfold-old
- Rename your enfold-new folder to enfold
- Check if all your existing settings work to your full satisfaction.
- Yes – then stop here
- No – delete or rename back the enfold folder back to enfold-new
- rename the enfold-old folder back to enfold

September 3, 2019 at 7:35 am #1133247September 12, 2019 at 4:48 pm #1137594I can only advise anyone to follow this path, especially if it’s a major update. You always have the roll-back in the background.
For smaller updates I recently also use the “update plugin and themes via zip” plugin, which works similar on request ( settings ).September 14, 2019 at 4:50 am #1138259June 28, 2022 at 7:26 am #1356654the plugin mentioned here is now obsolete – because wordpress has adopted some of it in newer versions. If the update process finds a theme or plugin that is already installed, you will be prompted to overwrite the existing one or not.
