Hi, long term graphic/visual designer here, however new to the WP theme tuning and the like…
I’m just loving the ENFOLD theme and the Avia advenced visual editor. Spent last few days designing the future pages for a client’s site, and at the moment everything’s allright except for the portfolio thing. However, I’m definitely struggling on this. I’ve been trying back and forth setting up portfolio items, categories, portfolio grids, masonry, non-masonry, etc, etc. Setting up “normal” pages whit portfolio grids, etc…
And after last weekend working on that, watching the video tutorials (is a Portfolio dedicated one that I’m missing?), re-reading the on/off-line documentation, etc, I still can’t figure out where to start. All my portfolio-related site previews show up blank or with no changes at all…
My idea is to create a /Services/ page in a “portfolio” styling. If I can accomplish this, maybe I can override those /Services/ submenus…
For the record, I have to say that I’m setting up the pages on their own. That is I’m designing each one of them and saving as draft in order to show the client screenshots, meet possible changes and leaving the menu structure and final publishing of the pages for the end…
Not sure if I’ explaining well, will be happy to provide further information as required.
Thanks!January 21, 2014 at 8:50 pm #212946Hey Juan!
For each of your portfolio items are you setting the featured image using the featured image meta box on the right hand side of the editor?
Best regards,
DevinJanuary 21, 2014 at 9:33 pm #212964Hi Devin!
Yes, I remember to have set a featured image in one of my testings and it kind of showed up but this point is also a little bit confusing to me, I mean, how does that isolated image works? Is it just kind of a thumbnail or it is something more relevant?…
The thing is that I can not clearly see what the term “portfolio items” refers to. I mean, well, I can get to know what they are for –showcasing portfolios– but I don’t get how my intended “parent-service” falls into this.
Do I have to set up different portfolios and then “fill” them with content? How? Where? In the /pages/ section? In the same /portfolio items/ section?
And once set, do I manually build the individual items to show like the demo site, don’t I? (http://kriesi.at/themes/enfold/portfolio-item/slider-two-third/)
I kind of like the portfolio
I’m sorry this answer is messing the whole thing up. It’s just that unlike most of the other sections of the editor this portfolio thing is the one that is bringing me down… ;)Thanks!
January 21, 2014 at 11:43 pm #213052Everything I would say to explain it is here: http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/create-new-portfolio-item/
I know you mentioned reading the docs so that may be something you’ve already read. If not, give it a read and see if it helps.
The gist of it is that each portfolio item is a page you create. Its content is blank until you add something in just like any other page. The featured image is what gets used to represent that portfolio item when using the Portfolio element in the advanced layout builder.
So for every single portfolio item you create you must set a featured image.
Then below the regular visual editor is the section for configuring how that specific item will show if you use the Ajax portfolio style. That is where the portfolio items open up on the same page as the grid.
January 22, 2014 at 2:15 am #213117ok, I now get the individual portfolio items. In fact I’ve just created some.
Now I guess I have to set up a /portfolio/ page and link some of the relevant elements to its counterparts (portfolio items). Am I right?Another thing. I dont get when or where to use and how the “portfolio grid” works. I put a “portfolio grid” in a -say- test page and all I can do is select categories and columns, sizes, links, etc. but now that I have those “portfolio items” set with the featured image I don’t know what to do with this “portfolio grid” I just don’t get it… It seems the “grid” –if any– cannot be “filled” cos in fact there’s no grid to fill… I’m for sure missing something.
Then there is the Ajax porfolio, but since I dont plan to use it right now… however in my tests I didnt get it to wrok or to show anything at all…
Glad if you can light me on this topics…January 22, 2014 at 2:34 am #213135Uh, sorry for the typos. Now at home on the iPad not the studio ;)
January 22, 2014 at 2:47 am #213147The portfolio grid lets you output portfolio *items* in a grid format.
You choose the categories to show and they are then loaded in on that page. So you can have a grid of portfolio items on any page you like.
January 22, 2014 at 12:24 pm #213277I think I’m seeing the light now. So it could be said that the “portfolio grid” is like a “pf manager” that can sit in any page/anywhere in the page as needed and as long as you have pf items (that is obvious) and categories created, is it?
Correct me if I’m wrong: is this mandatory to have such /portfolio/ page published (not just saved as draft) and the correspondant menu built for it to work properly?Still working on it, thanks!
January 23, 2014 at 9:47 am #213747Hey!
No, you don’t need to create a portfolio grid. The grid can be used to show all (or some) portfolio items – like the blog page will show your posts – but you are not forced to use it. The portfolio single entries will also work without a portfolio grid and posts are also accessible if you do not create a blog page. However it’s a question of “usability” because if you don’t create a portfolio grid the users won’t know that you created portfolio entries. You would need to incorporate the links to your portfolio entries into your pages, articles, etc. with other methods (i.e. text links, etc.)
Cheers!
PeterJanuary 23, 2014 at 2:04 pm #213831I see. So, if I want to make a portfolio page like http://kriesi.at/themes/enfold/portfolio/portfolio-3-column/?skin=Splash%20Red
or a “portfolio area” like http://kriesi.at/themes/enfold/?skin=Splash%20Red (under the “Showcasing your work…”) I’d better use a portfolio grid, but I can show any of the “potfolio items” via a link in the text in a post page or whatever other method whenever I need to…Now I have done some more testing and already get the site showing portfolio items as I want. A couple of days more and I’ll be just mastering that! ;)
Thanks for the answers Dude and Devin!
