Hi
I would like the search box to be ‘open’ in the header of my site so that its really obvious. Is that possible? I realize it will shift my main nav to the left.

You can refer to this post and add a widget area to your header – http://kriesi.at/documentation/enfold/adding-a-widget-area-to-the-header/
Once the widget area is created you can add a search widget to it.
