"read more" isn't working in text box

Hello,
I am wondering why the “read more” option isn’t working when I try to use it in a text box when used in a page. It shows up on the menu as an option, and the dotted line with “more” in the middle of it shows in the text box when editing, but there is no effect on the actual page.

I searched through the example pages and only found “read more” demonstrated on the blog posts: does it work in a text box on a page?
