I have been trying to improve the speed of the site given the recent Google changes and I am having some problems. I had initially loaded W3TC and BWP Minify based on recommendations here and ended up with fairly high speeds but a problem (especially seen in chrome) where the page would look like a sitemap (all text in a single column) briefly before loading the correct page. I have been trying to fix this problem, to the point where I have now disabled both plugins and in Chrome the problem now persists. I have tried clearing the cache for the page and reloading, and it works fine in Firefox, but I can’t get it to load cleanly in Chrome.
I am at a loss about the problem, and also about how to add caching that will speed the site. I tried several things and while I could get improvements, everything seemed to cause this problem. Initially I only saw it on the initial loading of the site (i.e. only on the home page), but now I see it on most pages in Chrome.
I am at a loss for what else to look into for this.
May 13, 2015 at 1:32 am #443473I remember seeing a post on this forum from Kriesi about what theme files can be minified and moved to the footer and what not. However i can not find it anymore. Maybe Kriesi can make it a sticky post. This is so important for SEO rankings and even more important recently with the google mobile algo. update.

I saw that you have the caching and minify plugins deactivated? Also, you have a lot of other plugins and one of them is probably causing a conflict somewhere, could you try to deactivate all plugins to see if one of them could be the culprit?
Cheers!

The site looks OK in chrome. You can read these articles about WordPress optimization:

IsmaelMay 16, 2015 at 3:06 am #445212I think the problem was the “Javascript to Footer” plugin. Try loading that somewhere and see if it causes the theme to give a text view before loading (basically all text in a single column). I put this in place because the Speed test from Google identifies this as one of the issues that makes the site not mobile-friendly.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by your last post, did disabling the Javascript to Footer plugin fix your problem or not?
Cheers!
RikardMay 19, 2015 at 10:47 pm #446753Yes, that worked, but my point was for your to look at it and see the problem. I put that in to get better Google speed test results.

May 21, 2015 at 6:21 am #447571Hi!
I’m not exactly sure what that plugin does but judging from its name it moves all javascript to load in the footer? I think that would be a bad idea since there is a reason why the javascript is loaded in the header, it needs to be there for the page to render properly and that is likely why you were experiencing the issue you were having.
