    Has there been a change since wp5 as I cant see anyway of adding a portfolio category to a portfolio item. There is a tag option but not category. has this changed or am I just not seeing it.

    Please try installing the Classic Editor plugin to see if you have any luck with it: https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-editor/

    Thanks that has sorted it so looks like something to be sorted in the theme for the future.

    That has also resolved another issue that I was having. Nothing was showing when using the portfolio grid feature but since changing to the classic editor it works ok now.

    Hi Dogmut,

    Installing the editor Rikard mentioned disables the new wordpress editor ‘Gutenberg’, which causes a lot of issue on a lot of sites/themes/page builders.
    Wordpress recommended installing the plugin, to disable the new editor and enable the old classic editor that we love in WordPress 4.9.8 :D
    Anyway, just glad that it’s all sorted out.
