I am trying to solve a display issue for a portfolio grid in a tab section. The portfolio grid makes clear that it spans the whole unless it is in a color section or a column but I cannot embed a tab section in a color section or a column it seems. So if I have a sidebar (which I want with this tab section) the sidebar floats OVER the portfolio items obscuring some of them. Is there a way to get the benefits of a tab section to shift between portfolio items that is not full width?

No, the tab section is a full-width element and it cannot really be used with sidebars. You might want to rethink your design for this page.
