I did a plugin update on my website and then received an error message saying I would have to check my email for instructions on how to log into recovery mode.
I attempted to make the fix in the recovery mode but not luck. Contacted my host (InMotion Hosting). They had to roll back the PHP to 5.6.40 for the site to come back online. They told me that Enfold is using an older version of PHP so it will not support new versions. I was using PHP 7.4. They said because Enfold has some components using depreciated PHP it could not support using PHP 7.4.
The hosting company also said they think my child theme is not up to date but I have never seen a child theme update come through.
I updated my Enfold to version 4.7.63 on August 15th. I had updated the PHP then as well. Things worked fine until I did the plugin update today.
I have the same theme on another website as well. I am afraid to update those plugins right now or I may lose that site.
Below is the message I got from WordPress about the fatal error when I updated the plugins today.
Howdy!
Since WordPress 5.2 there is a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.
In this case, WordPress caught an error with your theme, Enfold.
First, visit your website (https://transformativespirit.com/) and check for any visible issues. Next, visit the page where the error was caught (https://transformativespirit.com/wp-login.php?loggedout=true&wp_lang=en_US) and check for any visible issues.
Please contact your host for assistance with investigating this issue further.
If your site appears broken and you can’t access your dashboard normally, WordPress now has a special “recovery mode”. This lets you safely login to your dashboard and investigate further.
To keep your site safe, this link will expire in 1 day. Don’t worry about that, though: a new link will be emailed to you if the error occurs again after it expires.
When seeking help with this issue, you may be asked for some of the following information:
WordPress version 5.5.1
Current theme: Enfold Child (version 1.0)
Current plugin: (version )
PHP version 7.4.8Please advise.
September 20, 2020 at 3:52 am #1247040Hey Debra,
I can’t see anything obvious going wrong on the front end of your site, and I see that you are still running the latest version of the theme. Could you let us know how to reproduce the problem you are describing please?
Best regards,
RikardOctober 17, 2020 at 6:02 pm #1253514Hi Rikard,
Sorry for the late response. I had initially sent the response by email and realized it may have not gone through.
I went through and deactivated all of the plugins and individually re-installed them. It turns out EWWW Image Optimizer was causing the problem. I uninstalled it and install Smush and it is working fine now. I hope this is helpful to anyone else who had the same experience.
I had wanted to alert you because my hosting company had said there was code in Enfold that was old and did not allow for up to date PHP. It did not make sense but it seems there is some documentation out there that they were relaying to me.
Debra
