Hi there
out Hoster changed their php version to 8.1..8.0 is also been supported. But after the switch our site crashed and the typical critical WordPress error showed up. It seems that our enfold theme version 4.2.6 is not compatibel anymore with the new php version. For our site we also used an enfold child theme from it.I needed to change the theme in the database in order to simply get back to the WordPress Backend. So enfold theme is not activated at the moment, just a standard theme.
Can you help?
Ist seems like the same problem mentioned in this thread tims ago, that the update function did not work properly and so the theme ran out of updates -> https://kriesi.at/support/topic/php-7-4-enfold-new-version/
Kind regards,

Thanks for your question, so you don’t have the ability to downgrade the PHP version temporarily?
If you could then you could update the theme though WordPress ▸ Appearance ▸ Themes ▸ Add Themes ▸ Add New as in the second set of instructions in the post you linked to.
If you can not then follow the FTP instructions in the post you linked to. After you update via FTP then you can activate the Enfold theme and it should work correctly.Best regards,
MikeNovember 17, 2022 at 4:37 pm #1372966Hi Mike,
thanks for your reply. Unfortunately no, they stick with 8.0 or 8.1. No way to downgrade manually at hosting side. I think I need to go for the FTP update solution. Did you rename the child folder too or did you overwrite it with the child theme files?I am gonna give a try and come back to you as soon as possible with Feedback.
Kind regards,

November 17, 2022 at 5:30 pm #1372975Hi Marius,
Thanks for the update. It shouldn’t necessary to overwrite your child theme, unless you are overriding header.php or footer.php? If that is the case, then please replace those files with the parent theme files, then add your customisations back in after that.
Best regards,
RikardNovember 18, 2022 at 6:52 am #1373037Hi Rikard,
We always used the enfold child theme from the beginning to set up and operate our Website.
First I tried It in staging. I renamed the current child folder “enfold child old” via FTP, uploaded the current child theme from, activated it in the WordPress themes section and it worked, No Error message anynore. But: seems like all Settings, Logo, where the Blog appears etc. are gone?
Kind regards,
MariusNovember 18, 2022 at 12:31 pm #1373062Hi,
You should not replace your child theme, your settings are linked to it. So please remove your new child theme and rename your old one back.
If you are using a custom header.php or footer.php in your child theme please remove these.Best regards,
MikeNovember 18, 2022 at 2:35 pm #1373095Hi Mike,
ok thanks. I cannot see any header.php or footer.php in our child theme. What I did: I left the child folder as it is. I uploaded the current Enfold parent theme via ftp (before I renamed the old enfold like you described in your post). Then I activated the child theme and the known message showed up :”Es gab einen kritischen Fehler auf deiner Website.”. So seems that our current child theme is still not compatibel with new php 8.0 version.
When I tried to upload the new child theme from your site and activated it, it worked, but all settings were gone unfortunately.
Maybe I can share you an extra ftp account via private message so you can have a look at it or we schedule a short google meeting?
Kind regards,
MariusNovember 18, 2022 at 3:03 pm #1373099Hi,
Thanks for the update. The problem is likely coming from your child theme then, could you try to remove everything from it, then add your customisations back one after one to see when things start breaking? If you could share server error logs with us, then we could likely see what line of code is causing this problem.
Best regards,
RikardNovember 18, 2022 at 10:27 pm #1373163Hi Rikard
thank you. There were no valuable server logs to analyse. In the end, the only solution was to update the theme via Backend (Parent, child) and rework the settings manually.Fortunately it did not take too long as expected.
Thank you both, Mike and Rikard, for your awesome support here.
Kind regards,
