Hi guys
A peculiar url-problem when I name a page:
I named a page “example” and it comes up as “example-2” in the url??
I know I once made a page called “example” but I deleted it and afterwards permanently removed it from trash can. So it is long gone!
What is happening and how can I remove the “-2” so it will show in the url as just “example”?
I offcourse have tried to just rename it (edit the permanent link) but it just keeps returning to the “-2” version.
Thanks in advance

Please send us a temporary admin login and login URL so that we can have a closer look. You can post the details in the Private Content section of your reply.

RikardApril 8, 2017 at 8:38 am #774373@nonne you need to delete the revision of the old example page too. As long as the revision exist you can’t rename the new page slug. You can easily delete revisions with a plugin like https://de.wordpress.org/plugins/simple-revisions-delete/
April 8, 2017 at 9:13 am #774391Hi!
Please also take a look, if your Trash has already a page with that name.
Most of the times the issue is there.Thank you

BasilisApril 8, 2017 at 1:21 pm #774489Hi again guys. Nice to know someone is out there :-)
@Basilis: Thanks for answering. I allready emptied the trash, nothing there at all.
@mensmaximus: Thanks for answering. As the page does not exist, permanently deleted, I guess there a no revisions? Am I missing something?
@Rikard. Thanks – and please find info in private content.April 8, 2017 at 1:42 pm #774495@nonne yes revisions should get deleted if a post gets deleted permanently using wp_delete_post(). But I have seen many odd things done by developers in the past years. Therefore I suggest looking for orphaned revisions. Maybe I should have answered in more detail in the first step. Anyway you have a page, post, custom posttype entry, attachment or revision of one of them in your database wich causes the new entry to get renamed while saving by appending ‘dash’ and ‘amount of entries with same name’. Do you have knowledge in MySQL and do you know how to work with phpMyAdmin? If you do just search for the ‘example’ slug ( LIKE ‘example%’ ) in the posts table and you will see which entry is conflicting.
April 8, 2017 at 1:54 pm #774497@mensmaximus – Thanks a lot for your elaborated answer. I get your point, did not know that it could be an issue, so thanks for enlightening me :-)
I do not have much knowledge of MySQL, but I think I will look into phpMyAdmin to explore the possibilities as you kindly mentionned.
Thanks again.
April 8, 2017 at 4:58 pm #774576Hi again guys – just to let you know, that I now have tried to locate the post via phpmyAdmin. Only item I found was an image including that phrase. So no luck I am afraid – though I did learn a little about the possibilities in myAdmin :-)
April 8, 2017 at 5:07 pm #774584@nonne including the phrase like ‘my-example-image’ or matching ‘example’? If it is an exact match you found the issue.

Thanks again. I did try all options and also tried a comparison on other posts to make sure, I understood how it was working. Also tried with and without joker %… But thanks again. Going on weekend now :-)April 8, 2017 at 6:29 pm #774633Hi,
I suspect that you have a page or post with the same name in the “Trash”, but the login you provided was not admin so I could not check. Let us know if this was the case.Best regards,
MikeApril 8, 2017 at 8:17 pm #774673Hi Mike
Sorry, now it is admin. Thanks.
But as I mentioned the trash IS empty and as also mentioned I also cannot find a post with the name in the database.
best regards
April 8, 2017 at 9:10 pm #774699April 8, 2017 at 10:21 pm #774718Hi again Mike – and thanks a lot. That did the trick ;-)
Can’t figure out though why the name of an image should have anything to do with naming a post – but anyway: it worked :-)
Thanks again. Case closed.
Very best regardsApril 8, 2017 at 10:26 pm #774720@nonne Post, Pages and Attachments are stored in the Posts Table and use the same mechanism to be saved. The sanitation and verification of slugs therefore take the names of all this post types into account. I already told you “Anyway you have a page, post, custom posttype entry, attachment or revision of one of them in your database wich causes the new entry to get renamed while saving by appending ‘dash’ and ‘amount of entries with same name’.”
