I have been using the following format to open external links in my prettyPhoto lightbox.

Is there a way to have all external links open in this lightbox without having to manually edit each link?

If you’re not familiar with jquery I suggest to hire a freelancer. This script shouldn’t be very complex and with testing, etc. it probably takes 1 hour or so to implement it.
