How much memory is required to properly run Enfold? Lately, each time I update WordPress and Enfold I keep getting error messages about memory has been exceeded and it causes the site to go to a blank white page. The only way to fix the issue seems to be export the site, delete Enfold and WordPress. Reinstall WP. Reinstall Enfold. Import site. Reinstall plugins.
I really can’t be messing around with this every time WordPress or Enfold updates. And I need the extra plugins like Gravity Forms. My web host is only allowing 64 MB total.
April 16, 2014 at 3:37 am #251921Hey MtnStreamGroup!
I run my dev install with 128 and it hasn’t ever run into issues while running bbPress, WooCommerce and a handful of other plugins and hundreds of pages, posts and portfolio items. I’ve not done anything with Gravity Forms but if you are running into issues then the only real solution is to increase your memory limit either by switching hosts, upgrading your current plan or maybe by convincing the host to increase it.
There isn’t a hard minimum that we have in place for a must-have since it really depends on the individual usage. On some sites I’ve set up for clients they have only ever had 64 and had no issues but they weren’t using any significant plugins.
Best regards,
DevinApril 16, 2014 at 3:49 am #251924I’m using Jetpack, WordPress SEO, Gravity Forms and W3 Total Cache among a few others, As soon as Jetpack is activated with W3 Total Cache and WordPress SEO activated I can’t add any other plugins. Unless I delete the entire installation and start from scratch, but then when there is a WP update all hell breaks out. I never had this issue when I used bytesforall’s atahualpa theme.
I’ve been conducting research on the problem the last few hours since creating this thread. It seems that many of the premium WordPress themes that are using some form of visual composition editor are having huge PHP memory issues. For example, Themeco’s ‘X’ theme’s has 3 applications running more than 128m of memory each and pulling from several connections. Themeco responded to the post stating the Visual Composer is one of the 3 applications within theme that is heavily utilizing PHP resources. All the complaints in the Themeforest show that shared hosting plans from a wide variety of hosting services are having the most problems.
I really have to wonder if Kriesi’s Avia Framework and visual composition tool/application is one of the reasons we are having so many problems.
The following is one of the numerous fatal error messages we’ve been getting since upgrading to WP 3.8.2.
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1966080 bytes) in /wp-includes/SimplePie/Item.php on line 2736. Every time I turn off all of the plugins and try to activate them one at a time I get a different error message.

April 16, 2014 at 7:42 am #251955I didn’t mean to allude that it isn’t a theme issue. The layout builder definitely does take more memory to run when you are editing a page than a non visual editor.
The more plugins and more capabilities your theme has the more memory you will need to let everything run together and smoothly.
There is no way around it, if you are running out of memory you either need more or you will need to find a way to use less. The theme alone doesn’t *need* more than 64mb but when combined with other plugins who have their own requirements you would need more available.
April 16, 2014 at 7:49 am #251959Well I guess I have to find a different hosting service since our current host absolutely will not provide more than 64 MB of PHP memory.
To be quite honest theme designers like Kriesi keep adding more and more features — in most cases per the desires of theme buyers — but fail to take into consideration a business’ webhosting limitations. Then you have Auttomatic and WordPress adding more to their platforms. So it is becoming more and more problematic to fully utilize premium theme capabilities when you have hosting services limiting PHP to only 64 MB.

April 17, 2014 at 8:50 am #252499Hey!
Tbh if you run a serious business you also must invest some money into a decent website hosting service. Hostgator is a low budget host and and their server limitations do not reflect the standards of other shared hosting providers. Personally I pay 9€ per month for a shared host server with 128M and I never hit any server side limitations (execution time, php memory, max_post_vars, etc.).
Cheers!
PeterApril 17, 2014 at 4:36 pm #252771Dude … Thanks for the advise. I was unaware of the PHP memory limit issue until recently when I started using the premium themes from Themeforest. I’ve definitely started searching for a new hosting provider. Based on my research over the past few days there are a lot of people and businesses in the same situation with hosts restricting PHP memory limit. To top it off none of the hosting services post their PHP memory limit on their website. You have to ask them or find it in hosting reviews.
April 18, 2014 at 10:20 am #253081Hi!
Thank you for the update.
I hope you find the right hosting for your website. 64M for memory limit will not cut it if you’re using Enfold or any other premium themes that contains an ajax visual page builder plus third party plugins. Please let us know if you’re still experiencing the issue when you transfer the website on another host.
Best regards,
IsmaelApril 18, 2014 at 4:22 pm #253222One suggestion to Kriesi and all the other premium themes. This information needs to be included in your descriptions for your software. I got hooked by the design capabilities but had no idea that there would be this issue.
April 18, 2014 at 4:46 pm #253230Hey!
Thanks, we’ll discuss this issue.
