    Using perfect grid gets me close to what I want but the problem is the featured image at the top isn’t showing enough.

    Here’s what I want – the images showing as much full height as possible:

    Here’s what I’m getting – nearly whole image hidded my title/excerpt:

    Any way to control amout of featured image showing? Thanks.

    can you show us a link with your masonry gallery?
    Wordpress is cropping images by default when uploading. You can control it with a plugin like: https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-image-sizes/
